Exit Records – Mosaic Volume 2

28 deep and intelligent drum n bass tracks for $9.99! I stumbled upon this incredible EP released by Dbridge’s Exit Records label when a track that I have been waiting for appeared in my soundcloud feed, Beastie Respond’s One Last Minute. I quickly realized that most of this EP was showcased by D-Bridge in his recent Resident Advisor podcast mix  – making the purchase of this entire EP a no brainer.

The link to purchase the EP through iTunes is here, and the D-Bridge Resident Advisor podcast can be downloaded here.

ATM Podcast #005 – Mix from the Vault: Quirky DnB mixtape

Hello all, since I have been so lazy about recording a new set, I thought that I maybe should upload some really old ones.

This “mixtape” is from June 2006, and was created using audio production software and not live DJ equipment. I can’t take full credit for it, because it contains bits of other DJ sets. It includes a bunch of non-drum n bass tunes that I think you will enjoy. Man, this set is so old that I don’t remember how or why I put it together, but I do remember jammin’ out to it on the Long Island Expressway driving out to my old job out in Suffolk. Enjoy!

Review of the Transit One release by d&b label Dispatch Recordings

The Dispatch Recordings record label released a compilation album last week that needs to be heard by every serious drum & bass fanatic, entitled Transit One.

Many of the 15 tracks on this release went into my digital crate, as I was previewing the album track by track at Beatport.com, here. Not my favorite website to purchase the actual tracks from (sorry Beatport, your prices can be beat), but their website interface and navigation is top notch.

The tracks on this release aren’t full of the generic sample loops you hear, but rather filled with intelligent production and creative sampling, like in the track Clone, for example. The stabbing sub-bass line is layered with something I can describe as a typewriter, and timed to sound like typing. Great track.

But when an old and familiar sample is used, it’s done really well, like in the track Monkey Business, that begins with a subtle 303 bassline stab. The tight breakbeat is accentuated by the delicate synth cymbal, and the dark breath-like samples and deep sub bass pull everything together. Excellent track, in my opinion.

The release is balanced out by some liquid vibes and female vocals like in Mistakes, and some MC lyricism like in the tracks Structure and Red Mist. Got something for everybody in here.

Check this album out. No cheesy progressive chords or bubbly repetitive baselines here, just serious breaks and deep basslines done proper.

More sound samples and suggested link for purchasing are on their soundcloud page here.

Rockwell – Underpass

What to call this type of music…. Ambient? Minimal? Dub? Drum & Bass?

Whichever one of many genres this track might fall into, it is one thing. Very good. Well produced piece using techy blips and grinds with a very mellow rolling bassline. Filters and pans layer out this track nicely. See if you can catch the reverse snare sprinkled in there. Enjoy!

Beatport’s sale of the decade

Beatport.com is offering a sale of classic electronic goodness for 99 cents per song, starting today until Monday Jan. 25. Don’t miss this, there are literally thousands of tracks to choose from!! All for a dollar!

I briefly described my likes and dislikes of Beatport.com as an online mp3 store here. So go and select any music genre, then hit the “classics” button on the left. Beatport considers anything over a few years old a classic, so that that dancefloor hit from a few summers ago can be yours for only 99c.

Check out a tasting of some of their selected playlists here.

DJ/Producer spotlight – Spectrasoul

This duo from Brighton, England, has emerged onto the drum and bass scene in 2006, not fully coming to the forefront until 2008. Their ingenuity takes the drum & bass genre to the next level and makes them one of today’s top artists.

Signed with many top labels such as Metalheads, Subtitles and Shogun Audio, there is hardly a track they produce that isn’t a total banger on the dancefloor.

“The Four Points” – is a ragga jungle joint with a nice sub-bass line and a cymbal heavy breakbeat. Ragga rhymin included, of course.

“Alibi” – is one of my favorite liquid drum and bass tunes with a steady vibrating bassline that rrrrrolls right through the track. The piano chords are beautiful and well placed vocal samples set off the track.

Check them out all over the interweb, or just hit them up on their myspace page.

DJ/Producer Spotlight – John B

Every now and then, I will post a bio of some of my favorite talent in the electronic music industry.  Notable and noteworthy producers will be given attention to as well.

So for my first artist bio on my blog I want to introduce you to…

John B

This producer has been one of my favorites for almost 10 years now. He has been producing and remixing tracks for many years, spanning many different genres of electronic music. His career started in producing drum & bass, more recently progressing to the styles of techno and electro (I will touch on genres later).  His more recent remixes and DJ sets have punk and retro-rock influences, making me like his style even more.

He is very much plugged into the social networking scene, twittering, podcasting, myspacing and facebooking (if those are even real words) all of his activities.  He also has a radio show on Sirius XM satellite radio, called Redux.  His website john-b.com is loaded with social network links, tour photos & dates, and most importantly, downloadable podcasts of pretty much everything he does.

I highly recommend giving John B a listen, especially if you are into techno and drum & bass. He is truly a talent that I have enjoyed for a long time.
