Got DAW?

DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation, and can refer to any piece of hardware or PC software that allows you to produce, edit and playback music.

DAWs tend to have multiple hardware or audio inputs and several audio outputs for sound reproduction and/or monitoring. They keep getting smaller and more technologically advanced, making them less than those huge studio mixing boards and more like those old school “groove boxes”.

Like the Akai MPC5000, a$3000 synthesizer, effects processor,  drum machine, multi-track recorder, sequencer and sampler – a complete sound studio 18″ wide by 16″ deep.

Or the 6×7 inch Korg D4 – a 4-track recorder, effects processor, song editor, and instrument tuner. A recording studio the size of a stack of greeting cards.

Best Buy announces to sell DJ equipment

bblocation

Electronics giant Best Buy is partnering with Dr. Dre’s Beats Electronics to create DJ equipment areas in all of their retail stores. Consumers will be able to purchase DJ equipment including turntables, mixers and production software. A handful of stores will have a full “Club Beats” area, with music sampling stations and interactive areas to sample products. While up to 300 other stores will have areas with less product selection. Monster Cable is also getting in on the act, offering their DJ related product selection to the mix.

Best Buy is planning to kick off their new “Club Beats” venture, with celebrity appearances, incuding the Godfather himself, Dr.Dre.

Finally, the electronics superstore is jumping onto the band wagon, doing what smaller music stores have been doing for years. Now I don’t have to pay regular price for my DJ equipment at Guitar Center or Sam Ash anymore, I can overpay at Best Buy now….. but then again this apparent attempt by a mainstream retailer at acceptance of the whole DJ-ing craze isn’t such a bad thing after all?
